Sunset at Lake Yosemite

No Moon, but I See the Sun

Looking at my The Photographer’s Ephemeris last week I noticed that the Waning Crescent Moon might be visible on December 1 until around 4pm. Decided to take a drive to Lake Yosemite in Merced. I wanted a picture of the Moon and the “Witch Tower”. Unfortunately I didn’t see it, but I decided to stay until sunset…since I was there anyway!

I saw some clouds to the north and east so I walked around the beach until I found a suitable spot. Since they partially drain the lake (probably 10 feet), I found some interesting rocks as a foreground element (I hope). As usual, by the time the sun started to set, the clouds started to disappear. I turned around to see the sun starting to set and I saw the “Witch Tower” close by. I switched to my “big lens” and got a shot of the setting sun on the left and the “Witch Tower” to the right. There were two birds flying by, so that added to the “cool” factor (I think).

I didn’t want to be locked in, so I started to walk back to the car. I turned around and quickly composed the last light over most of the lake.
